Micro-Needling

MICRO-NEEDLING

Micro-needling is a very simple, safe, effective, and minimally invasive therapeutic technique. It was initially introduced for skin rejuvenation, but is now used for acne scars, alopecia, hyperhidrosis, stretch marks, and many more indications.

It is safe to use even in dark skin types, where risk of skin discoloration is high with other techniques like laser treatment or microdermabrasion.

Micro-needling improves:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Stretch marks
  • Enlarged pores
  • Scars from surgery, acne, or chickenpox
  • Sagging skin (including eyelids!)
  • Pigmentation marks from sun damage or acne

Micro-needling has proven more effective than laser resurfacing and chemical peels in stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, which reinforces the skin, removes the wrinkles and smooths the scars.

The cost varies depending on which area you are treating and the size of the area, but ranges from $150-$700 per session, with 4-6 treatments depending on skin condition and your age.

Mechanism:
Micro-needling produces micro-injuries to the skin which encourages and harnesses the power of the body to re-grow and repair itself naturally.  It has a faster recovery than other traditional skin rejuvenation treatments.  The vibration of the Vistapen increases the absorption of products such as Hyaluronic Acid during the treatment.  It is as effective as Fraxel, IPL, Laser resurfacing, and chemical peels.

What is PRP Micro-needling:
Micro-needling with PRP (platelet rich plasma) is actually TWO separate procedures: micro-needling AND PRP (platelet rich plasma) done together.

Micro-needling:
The first procedure involves tiny micro-needles passing over the skin creating tiny micro-wounds, or channels, in the skin.  The body’s natural healing process stimulates collagen and elastin.

PRP (platelet rich plasma):
Platelet Rich Plasma is produced from your own blood.  After a blood sample is drawn (approximately 30ml or 3 tubes of blood), the blood is spun in a centrifuge, which separates the PRP from the red blood cells.

The plasma contains the highly concentrated natural growth factors and other cytokines that are involved in the regeneration of the soft tissues.  The PRP is applied directly to the channels that were created by micro-needling and is sometimes injected directly into the skin similar to a “filler” such as Radiesse or Juvederm (including in the lips for augmentation).

Recovery:
Your skin will be mildly pink and feel like a mild sunburn right after the treatment.  Recovery occurs over 24-72 hrs.  The next day you can expect a “glow” and improvement of your appearance, but your body will create collagen for 4-8 weeks, so your skin will continue to improve over weeks.

Does it hurt?:
A topical numbing cream is used to minimize discomfort.  There is a vibrating sensation on the skin.  The Vistapen can be adjusted if discomfort occurs but this rarely is needed.
